Use Case Name:

Application Centric Connectivity

Use Case Description:

Deploy containerized and distributed applications to bare Linux and Kubernetes endpoints in any location in conjunction with a dedicated network overlay and any needed infrastructure (software-defined).  And when various components of that application are moved to a new environment or locations, move the connectivity along with it without any downtime.  The configuration of the application and corresponding connectivity should be represented by declarative intent.

Overview-

LF-Networking, a Linux Foundation initiative, extends network functionalities to deliver real-time data services at the edge - without reliance on the cloud. This innovative integration combines EdgeLake (a Virtual Data Layer), Open Horizon (an Edge Orchestration Platform), and advanced networking capabilities to empower telecom companies to provide edge data services traditionally dominated by cloud providers.

In today’s landscape, organizations face challenges of cost, latency, and compliance by transferring edge data to the cloud. LF-Networking disrupts this dependency by enabling data to remain at the edge while being serviced to applications as seamlessly as if hosted in a centralized cloud database.

This groundbreaking approach transforms telecom companies from being mere data pipelines to full-fledged edge data service providers. Importantly, it requires no investments in data centers, software development, or modifications to existing telecom infrastructure. With LF-Networking, telecom companies can capitalize on new revenue opportunities and strengthen their competitive position in the rapidly evolving data economy.

-Problem Statement

Separate teams currently manage network access and overlays, and application deployments.  This approach removes barriers and empowers those deploying applications to also specify, provision, and stand up the connectivity within provided guardrails.

Industry Use Cases Descriptions

Use Cases from existing demo

  1. Using CI/CD automation to connect deployed applications to remote services. Nephio? Joe Pearson

  2. Moving a network overlay to a new location without disrupting an application’s connectivityMuddasar Ahmed to provide detail (gNodeB components):  RAN Components are CU-CP, CU-UP, DU-CP, DU-UP, RU.  ORAN RAN gNodeB implementation components are SMO(Service Management, and Orchestration controller), CU-CP, CU-UP, DU-CP, DU-UP, RU.  SMO has subcomponents- Non-Realtime RIC, and Near Realtime-RIC, xApps and r-Apps.

  3. Resilliency and Redundancy capabilities- Showing application connectivity resilliency in the face of a network segment going down

  4. Enabling application mobility

Users Stories

  • Muddasar Ahmed after watching the video will add to user story(s)

  • Company A is researching options for deploying an edge solution. The company is offered a plug and play solution that would make the starting point a virtual data lake or a virtual cloud where queries can be run against the edge (rather then sending engineers to the edge and moving huge amounts of data to the virtual cloud.)

  • Company B needs to move across the virtual cloud. A solution is offered where the data can be moved by expressing an SQL query(s) (rather then sending engineers to the edge to move the data).

Business Justications

Requirements

  • Portability of Workloads- Workloads have to be capabile of running in each of 3 environments (private virtualized data center, AWS/Google Clould/Azure, or 3rd party) relatively unchanged both in the cloud and at the edge.

    • decription or information model that describes the appplication itself @joe

  • Transparently move components of a complex application, or the whole application itself between the locations with no downtime.

      • Reduces data duplication

      • Data not centralized. Data is on virtual layer vs physical data. No transfer of data.
